The Privileges and Downsides of Open Campus

The weather is finally starting to become warmer, while inside school students are impatiently twisting and fidgeting in their seats. Who wouldn't want to get out of school after being there for about six hours a day and one-hundred eighty days a year. If schools had given the students the privilege of going outside of school grounds during break times, it would cure the students to become more active during class.

To begin, not all see it as a good idea to have open campus, the idea is seen as a safety issue. The red flag goes up for some parents and teachers when the thought of their children leaving school to go elsewhere during break. Some parents fear that peer pressure in drugs and alcohol will rise when not under the adults eyes, or becoming a target of others from the streets. While the parents are at work or attending other businesses, they wouldn't want to be worrying about whether the safety of their children is in good hands when the school allows the students to leave campus. This brings us into how the students bring themselves into this responsibility, would the students at the schools trust that they will not cause trouble during school hours.

On the latter, wouldn't it be a pleasure to do as you please during your lunch break, that is of course something appropriate in public. Like going out with a couple of friends to eat lunch at a popular restaurant, or taking a quick drive to home and catching up on things such as school work and other businesses. High school students would be given the opportunity to prove themselves trustworthy to the schools eyes, as suitable young adults. Not only will it bring light to them from the adults point of view, but it could as well teach the young adults the responsibilities of the so called 'big world'. For example, like time management, coming back to school, and behaving in public as not to get the school involved in their trouble. The youth will learn to know that if abusing these privileges, it would make sense that the school will give proper punishment, but if it were to happen frequently the school would come to terms of taking open campus away.

The idea of open campus can give a student their piece of freedom during the day, while learning the ropes to responsibility unconsciously, it is like killing two birds with one stone. It gives all the pleasure of mind that the students can come to school and learn, then leave school to rejuvenate their minds after a refreshing break, to come back to school again and become concentrated on their class work. On the down side, the safety of those comes to mind as well, while not under the teachers or adults supervision it could only be a wonder what happens during the schools passing time. Personally I think open campus is a great idea because it lets the students have a break outside the schools walls to rebuild their energy and come back ready to finish the school day.
